Borehole

We’ve now completed the drilling programme and have cores for 500 metres of rock from near Berwick upon Tweed. Sadly, we didn’t succeed in getting through the entire Ballagan Formation, which seems to be rather thicker than we’d calculated.

The core has now been transported to BGS Keyworth in Nottinghamshire, where it has been slabbed (ie sliced in half lengthways). One half will be stored for future work, while the other half is currently being logged by Carys Bennett and Tim Kearsey.

Here are a few photographs of the exercise, taken by various members of the BGS team. They're all copyright BGS as far as I know.

Tim Kearsey has also posted about the drilling programme and given lots more interesting information on the BGS GeoBlogy blog.
